An oil tanker collided with a car on the outskirts of the Ugandan capital Kampala on Sunday, leading to a massive explosion that killed at least twenty- nine people and left many injured, reports said.

The majority of the victims were those who had gathered around the tanker on motorbikes to collect fuel that spilled following the collision.

The bodies of the deceased have been kept in the Mulago Hospital where relatives are identifying them. Medical officers are reportedly struggling to handle the situation, given the high number of causalities.

May such accidents, involving tankers carrying inflammable substances, have occurred in Kampala in the past, which is a main transit point for transporting fuel to remote places like Rwanda, Burundi and Congo.
