Reddit Used By 6% Of Adult Internet Users, Study Shows

Six percent of all online adults in the U.S. use Reddit, the self-proclaimed 'front page of the Internet,' a new study showed.

The website is more popular among male population, with male users representing double the number of female users, according to the study conducted by Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. Pew found that disparity between male and female users was the highest in the 18-29 age demographics, which has some 15 percent of male users while female users were only 5 percent.

The survey observed a significant drop in male users in older age, as only 8 percent of males between 30-49 and 3 percent of male between 50-64 use Reddit. Female users were almost stable among all age groups. Meanwhile, only two percent of internet users above 65 years use Reddit, the study showed.

Pew noted that the number of Reddit users is almost same as the number of Tumblr users. Meanwhile, 16 percent of adults internet users in US use Twitter, while Pinterest has 15 percent users and Instagram 13 percent. Pew noted that some 67 percent of online adults are Facebook users.

Pew's results are based on the telephone survey conducted on 2,252 adults aged 18 and older in English and Spanish from April 17 to May 19, 2013.

Reddit is a social news and entertainment website where a community of people submit links and vote them 'up' or 'down' based on its novelty or ability to generate amusement. The website was founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005. According to the website, it had more than 70 million unique visitors from from 183 different countries in June.

Based on race or ethnicity, Hispanics are the biggest users of Reddit with 11 percent, compared to 5 percent of whites, non-Hispanic and 4 percent black, non-hispanics. Reddit is more popular among urban and suburban internet users compared to users in rural areas, as 6 percent of people from urban areas and suburban areas use Reddit, while only 2 percent of people from rural areas use Reddit.
