Organizers of the Brit Awards have announced that they have added a new honor to their list of prizes, the Brits Icon Award. Promoters also announced that the first recipient will be Elton John.
Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the BPI and Brit Awards, said Elton earned the award by making a "lasting impact" on British culture; in addition, he has "achieved such a level of artistic creativity and originality, critical acclaim, global recognition and popular success."
Elton added: "It's a tremendous honor and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I'm really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion."
The Brit Awards go down on September 2 and will be aired later in the month on ITV. Elton will be on hand to perform some classic hits as well as some material from his upcoming album The Diving Board.
