Elton John, who recently affirmed his intention to travel to Moscow to perform, has been met with resistance from a parents' group opposed to the Rocket Man's homosexuality.

Protesters, in a petition to president Vladimir Putin, claim that John is violating a ban on "homosexual propaganda" in Russia.

"The singer intends to come out in support of local sodomites and break the current Russian law, directed at protecting children," the group wrote in its letter.

In an interview with the Guardian this month, John said that he feels a sense of obligation to go to Russia, in order to support the country's oppressed gays:

"As a gay man, I can't leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don't know what's going to happen, but I've got to go."
