The Wikipedia foundation is at loggerheads with Wiki-PR, a Texas based PR firm, for creating fake Wiki entries and editing the original Wikipedia pages without complying to the site's terms of service.

Following a month-long investigation into a massive scam, Wiki-PR has been found to have created more than 300 fake accounts, thereby using it to edit the original Wikipedia articles for money, a practice known as sock-puppeting.

The organization and its lawyers, Cooley LLP, on Tuesday sent a cease-and-desist letter, requesting Wiki-PR to stop editing Wikipedia pages on behalf of their clients.

According to Wikipedia, the entire reports on the massive scam traces back to Wiki-PR, which has also been accused of engaging in meat-puppetry -- a practice of joining blogs and other online discussions with a fake identity, to support a particular argument.

Nevertheless, in a statement, Jordan French of Wiki-PR told the Guardian that, "We do paid editing and not paid advocacy. We're as boring as any other research firm."
