Peter Capaldi succeeded Matt Smith as the new time lord in "Doctor Who." Capaldi made his debut during the Christmas special which aired Wednesday night on BBC One.

"To the Whoniverse, thanks a million. You're the best. I'll miss you. And I'll miss the madness," wrote Capaldi on Twitter following the airing.

Show runner Steven Moffat also hit the micro blogging site to give Smith a send off:

"Farewell to Matt Smith, citizen of the universe and a gentleman to boot. He'll be standing ready, should the cosmos ever need him again!"

Finally, actress Jenna Coleman reflected on the x-mas episode and the change of guard: "It's full of lots of joy and laughter and adventure. And actually, what I love about it is, it's the Doctor and Clara as friends, kind of going through all these changes together."
