Billy Joel has donated a piano worth $250,000 to the music department of Stony Brook University in his hometown of Long Island, New York.
Perry Goldstein, the department's head, said that he saw Joel recently and thanked him for another piano he'd previously donated:
"He told me he's heard very good things about the music program at Stony Brook and said that he might have another piano for us. Some months later, we received the Bosendorfer," added Goldstein, referring to the Bosendorfer Imperial Grand.
The model is handmade in Austria and features 97 keys, rather than the typical 88 found on most pianos. The Bosendorfer is considered the Rolls Royce of the piano world.
Catch Joel on Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest on New Year's Eve. He's just one of the many performers scheduled for the year end blow out.
