The United States has pledged $50 million to Ukraine to help the government pursue political and economic reforms.

In addition to the $50 million package, the US will provide $8 million in non-lethal military assistance to support the Ukrainian armed forces and State Border Guard Service, who are now confronting pro-Russian groups in the country's eastern regions.

The aid was announced on Tuesday by US Vice-President Joe Biden while addressing a joint news conference in Kiev with Ukraine's interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Denouncing Russia's annexation of Crimea, the US Vice President called on Moscow to "stop talking and start acting" to defuse the Ukraine crisis.

In his brief visit to Ukraine aimed at assuring Washington's moral support at a time of political crisis, Biden delivered a speech at the parliament, and met with the country's civil society leaders and Yatsenyuk.

The United States is contributing $11.4 million to support the integrity of the May 25 presidential elections.

Over the coming weeks, expert teams from several U.S. government agencies will travel to the region to help Ukraine meet immediate and longer term energy needs.

A U.S. inter-agency expert team has already arrived in Kyiv to help Ukraine secure reverse flows of natural gas from its European neighbors.
