"Godzilla" director Gareth Edwards is set to direct the first ever "Star Wars" film to take place outside of the core episodic saga.

Lucasfilm and Disney have begun work on several stand-alone "Star Wars" films, as well as the forthcoming trilogy. While no plot details were released for the Edwards-directed movie, the companies announced that it would be written by Gary Whitta ("After Earth," "The Book of Eli") and will open in theaters on December 16, 2016.

"Ever since I saw "Star Wars," I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance," Edwards said in a statement. "I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."

Disney initially announced the stand-alone "Star Wars" back in February 2013, which will focus on characters outside of the main saga.
