With the Highway Trust Fund expected to run out of money sometime next month, President Barack Obama is scheduled to hold a series of events this week to highlight the importance of increased infrastructure investment in the U.S.

Obama is due to visit a highway research facility in Northern Virginia on Tuesday and an infrastructure site in Wilmington, Delaware, on Thursday.

The president is expected to deliver remarks at both events urging Congress to take action to replenish the Highway Trust Fund.

House and Senate committees have passed measures that would keep the trust fund solvent into next year, but lawmakers must work quickly to pass a final bill before the August recess.

Obama has called for a longer-term $302 billion transportation bill funded by closing certain corporate tax loopholes.

The White House is scheduled to release a report on Monday highlighting the long-term economic benefits of investing in transportation and infrastructure projects.

The administration also plans to launch a new website that features an interactive map allowing Americans to see the age and condition of roads and bridges in their communities.

Along with Obama's events in Virginia and Delaware, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx will also hold a series of events throughout the week urging congressional action.

Earlier this month, Obama told the members of his Cabinet to get creative about steps the administration can take to address issues vital to the middle class, including rebuilding the nation's deteriorating infrastructure.

"We're not always going to be able to get things through Congress, at least this Congress, the way we want to," Obama said.

He added, "But we sure as heck can make sure that the folks back home know that we're pushing their agenda and that we're working hard on their behalf and we're doing every single thing we can do to make a difference in their lives."
