Mexico's retail sales in May rose at a more-than-expected from a year ago, after declining in the previous month, preliminary figures from the statistical office INEGI showed Tuesday.
Retail sales grew 1.6 percent year-on-year in May, rebounding from a 0.4 percent fall registered in April. Economists had forecast a 1.0 percent increase for May.
The rise in the index for May was driven by the increase of sales in stationery, recreation and other personal items, food, beverages and tobacco, supermarkets and department stores and hardware stores.
Retail sales, on a seasonally adjusted basis, dropped 0.06 percent in May, compared to the previous month.
At the same time, wholesale trade also advanced 0.5 percent yearly in May, reversing a 2.4 percent sharp decline in the previous month.
