South Korea Unemployment Rate Rises Slightly In December

South Korea's unemployment rate increased slightly in December, figures from Statistics Korea showed Wednesday.

The jobless rate came in at seasonally adjusted 3.5 percent in December, up from 3.4 percent in the previous month. The rate was expected to remain unchanged at 3.4 percent.

On an unadjusted basis, the unemployment rate climbed to 3.4 percent in December from 3.1 percent in November.

The number of unemployed persons increased to 886,000 in December from 818,000 in the prior month. At the same time, the number of employed persons totaled 25.38 million, up 422,000 from a year ago.
