Latvia Retail Sales Growth Accelerates Sharply In January

Latvia's retail sales growth accelerated sharply at the start of the year, after easing in the previous month, figures from the Central Statistical Bureau showed Monday.

Retail sales climbed a calender adjusted 6.7 percent year-over-year in January, much faster than December's 2.7 percent increase.The latest rate of growth was the highest since April 2014, when sales surged 10.3 percent.

Sales of food products grew 5.0 percent in January from the previous year and non-food products sales advanced by 7.8 percent. Retail sale of automotive fuel alone surged by 11.0 percent.

On a monthly basis, retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 1.7 percent in January, in contrast to a 1.3 percent decline in the prior month.
