Romania's retail sales increased at the start of the year, figures from the National Institute of Statistics showed Tuesday.
Retail sales excluding motor vehicles climbed a working-day and seasonally adjusted 1.6 percent month-on-month in January.
Sales of food, beverages and tobacco grew 3.2 percent monthly in January, while sales of non-food products fell by 0.3 percent. Motor fuel sales in specialized stores rose 0.2 percent.
Year-on-year, retail sales surged an adjusted 6.8 percent in January. Sales of food, beverages and tobacco rose 7.6 percent and that for non-food products grew by 4.0 percent.
On an unadjusted basis, retail sales plunged 24.4 percent monthly in January , but climbed 6.3 percent from the previous year.
