India's wholesale prices declined for the fifth consecutive month in March, data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed Wednesday.

The wholesale price index dropped 2.33 percent in March from last year, faster than February's 2.06 percent fall and a 2.05 percent decrease forecast by economists.

In March, fuel and power prices plunged 12.56 percent, while food article prices advanced 6.3 percent. Manufactured product prices logged an annual fall of 0.19 percent.

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices gained only 0.17 percent in March.

The build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was -2.33 percent compared to a build up rate of 6 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Data released earlier this week showed that consumer price inflation eased to 5.17 percent in March from 5.37 percent in February.
