Greece's consumer prices declined at a faster-than-expected pace in September, figures from the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed Friday.

The consumer price index dropped 1.7 percent year-over-year in September, exceeding economists' expectations for a 1.5 percent decrease. In August, prices had fallen 1.5 percent. The index has been falling since March 2013.

Housing costs dipped 7.4 percent annually in September and transport costs went down by 5.8 percent. At the same time, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew 3.7 percent.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 1.8 percent in September, reversing a 0.4 percent drop in the prior month.

The EU measure of inflation, or HICP, fell 0.8 percent yearly in September, which was worse than the 0.4 percent drop in August. The expected rate of decline for September was also 0.4 percent.

Month-on-month, the harmonized index of consumer prices climbed 1.2 percent in September, in contrast to a 0.2 percent fall in the preceding month. It was the first increase in three months.
