Keep on sitting at your office desk, as standing does not make much difference.
Regardless of how you use your work station, you must get some exercise to stay healthy.
Several studies have linked sitting at a desk for all day to higher risk of obesity, heart disease, colon cancer and Type 2 Diabetes.
However, a new study refutes all those earlier studies by claiming that there is no major difference between the death rates among people who sat and those who stood for similar periods.
The study indicates that the problem lies in the absence of movement, rather than the time spent sitting.
Dr Melvyn Hillsdon from Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter said "Our study overturns current thinking on the health risks of sitting and indicates that the problem lies in the absence of movement rather than the time spent sitting itself.
"Any stationary posture where energy expenditure is low may be detrimental to health, be it sitting or standing," Hillsdon said.
The study studied health of more than 5,000 people over the course of 16 years. Although, about 450 people died during the survey, none of these deaths were associated with sitting for longer periods, the study concluded.
