Italy Trade Surplus Climbs In December

Italy's foreign trade surplus increased in December from a year ago, as exports grew faster than imports, figures from the statistical office Istat showed Tuesday.

The trade surplus rose to EUR 6.0 billion at the end of the year from EUR 5.7 billion in the corresponding month last year. In November, the surplus was EUR 4.4 billion.

Exports climbed 3.0 percent year-over-year in December and imports went up by 2.6 percent.

Shipments to EU countries gained 3.3 percent annually in December and those to non-EU states increased by 3.6 percent.

On a monthly basis, both exports and imports dropped by 2.2 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively in December.
