Greece Dec Current Account Deficit Narrows

Greece's current account deficit decreased notably in December from a year ago, data from Bank of Greece showed Friday.

The current account deficit narrowed to EUR 0.8 billion at the end of the year from EUR 1.9 billion in the corresponding month last year.

The goods trade deficit fell to EUR 1.5 billion in December from EUR 1.5 billion a year earlier. At the same time, the surplus on services trade shrank to EUR 347.7 million from EUR 521.4 million.

The primary income balance swung to a surplus of EUR 323.1 million from a deficit of EUR 41.9 million in the same month of the previous year. Similarly, the secondary income balance showed a surplus of EUR 43.5 million versus a deficit of EUR 309.5 million.

Meanwhile, the capital account surplus decreased to EUR 136.7 million from EUR 245.3 million. The deficit in the financial account dropped considerably to EUR 351.4 million from EUR 2.2 billion.

In 2015, the total trade deficit of the country narrowed markedly to EUR 7.5 million from EUR 4.0 billion in 2014.
