Greece Jobless Rate Rises In January

Greece's unemployment rate increased marginally at the beginning of the year, figures from the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed Thursday.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose to 24.4 percent in January from 24.3 percent in the previous month, which was revised up from 24.0 percent estimated earlier. Economists had expected the unemployment rate to increase to 24.2 percent.

In the corresponding month last year, the jobless rate was 25.7 percent.

The number of unemployed people decreased by 3,570 from December and by 62,999 from January 2015.

The youth unemployment rate, which applies to the 15 to 24 age group, climbed to 51.9 percent in January from 50.5 percent a year ago.
