Greece's manufacturing sector expanded in August as new orders grew for the first time in two years on the back of strong export demand, survey data from IHS Markit showed Thursday.

The purchasing managers' index for the manufacturing sector rose to 50.4 from 48.7 in July. A PMI score above 50 suggests expansion in the sector.

New orders increased for the first time since August 2014 with export orders rising at the fastest pace in 25 months. Production grew partly reflecting the strong overseas demand.

Employment growth continued despite a further decline in outstanding business and cost pressures intensified. However, firms continued to reduce output charges.
