Japan's confidence improved for the second straight month in September to the highest level in three years, defying economists' expectations for a decrease, survey figures from Cabinet Office showed Tuesday.
The consumer confidence index rose to 43.0 in September from 42.0 in the previous month. Meanwhile, economists had expected the index to fall to 41.5.
The latest reading was the highest since September 2013, when it marked 45.4.
Among components, the gauge for overall livelihood strengthened to 42.0 in September from 40.9 in August. The index measuring income growth edged up by 0.2 points to 41.1.
The employment index climbed by 1.7 points to 46.2 in September. Similarly, the index for willingness to buy durable goods increased to 42.5 from 41.5 in the preceding month.
