The construction sector in Australia swung to contraction in October, the latest survey from the Australian Industry Group revealed on Monday with a 20-month low Performance of Construction Index score of 45.9.

That's down sharply from 51.4 in September, and it falls emphatically beneath the boom-or-bust line of 50 that separates expansion from contraction.

Among the individual components, construction for apartments and housing both fell steeply, while engineering and commercial construction also contracted.

Employment, supplier deliveries, selling prices and new orders all saw significant weakness.
