Sly Stone will receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming ceremony, according to Rolling Stone.
In their consideration of Stone for the honor the Recording Academy credited him as being "a critical role in the development of soul, funk, rock, and psychedelia."
Other artists receiving the honor include The Velvet Underground and Nina Simone. The announcement was made by the Grammy organization on Monday, December 19.
Additional artists, such as gospel singer Shirley Caesar, jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, country singers Charley Pride and Jimmie Rodgers will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards as part of the Grammys' Special Merit Awards.
The Recording Academy is also releasing a book next year titled A Grammy Salute To Music Legends, which includes two decades of artists writing special tributes to the Special Merit Awards honorees.
The 2017 Grammy Awards will take place on February 12 and will be hosted by James Corden.
