FLIPPENING refers to a point of time in future when Bitcoin may be dethroned as the top cryptocurrency by an altcoin such as Ethereum.
This could happen once the values of altcoins stop being based on that of Bitcoin, thus reducing its dominance in terms of market capitalization and popularity in the crypto market. The threat of an altcoin surpassing Bitcoin in importance, or FLIPPENING , is real with many new cryptocurrencies offering better scalability, lower cost and more speed.
Several altcoins are based on distributed ledger technologies other than Bitcoin's blockchain such as Ethereum and Ripple. And there are those like IOTA that is not based on a blockchain, but uses a next generation distributed ledger technology, which is essentially a mathematical concept called a directed acyclic graph, or DAG.
