Metallica paid tribute to Prince while performing in the late music icon's city on Tuesday, as part of the North American leg of the band's "WorldWired" tour.

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo performed a cover of "When Doves Cry," from Prince's 1984 album Purple Rain, at the Target Center basketball arena in Minneapolis.

They returned to Minneapolis after playing at the opening-weekend concert at U.S. Bank Stadium two years ago.

The legendary metal band has been following a policy to pay tribute to local artists at each stop of their Worldwired Tour.

From Minneapolis, Metallica moves on to Lincoln, Nebraska, for a Thursday gig.

The North American leg of the WorldWired tour kicked off in Madison on Sunday, and will conclude in March.
