Gainers:

Transatlantic Holdings Inc. (TRH) is gaining 13% to $51.00 as as Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (BRKa) formally entered the bidding battle for the reinsurer with its group company National Indemnity Co. offering $52 per share. The all-cash offer valued at about $3.25 billion currently tops two existing rival bids from Allied World Assurance Company Holdings, AG (AWH) and Validus Holdings Ltd. (VR).

BroadSoft, Inc. (BSFT) is rising 22% to $29.00 as it swung to a profit in its second quarter of 2011, compared to a loss in the previous year. Non-GAAP earnings per share were above Wall Street view. Total revenue rose 63%. The company increased its guidance for full year 2011.

Decliners:

Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) is falling over 2% to $34.14 amid news that nearly 45,000 employees of the telecommunications giant went on strike on Sunday after failing to reach an agreement on a new labor contract. The contracts with the Communication Workers of America, CWA, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW, expired at midnight Saturday. The contract covers 35,000 CWA represented workers and 10,000 IBEW-represented workers.

Dynegy Inc. (DYN) is down 19% to $3.97 amid reporting a narrower loss in its second quarter. Adjusted EBITDA fell 18% from the previous year. The company's loss for the first half of 2011 widened sharply from the previous year.

Travelzoo Inc. (TZOO) is down 9% to $44.50.

Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. (MPEL) is declining nearly 11% to $11.20 in pre-market trading.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is down over 2% to $364.95.

Sohu.com Inc. (SOHU) is down 4% to $70.20.

F5 Networks, Inc. (FFIV) is down more than 6% to $77.50.

Central European Media Enterprises Ltd. (CETV) is falling 9% to $13.31.

ZAGG Inc (ZAGG) is down 10% to $12.05.

The European Central Bank became the first major central bank to move in response to the rising inflationary pressures in the backdrop of the conflict in the Middle East. In North America, the U.S. inflation and trade data as well as Canada’s central bank decision gained attention. The Chinese trade data was the main news in Asia.
