Device-based medical therapy provider Medtronic Inc. (MDT) Thursday announced results from trials evaluating improvements in blood-glucose control among children affected with type-1 diabetes, who used insulin pumps augmented with personal Continuous Glucose Monitoring or CGM.
In an oral presentation of results from the ONSET trail, the company revealed that patients using Personal CGM regularly experienced lower average blood glucose values during the first year, compared to those using conventional insulin pumps.
The ONSET trials, sponsored by the company, were conducted in Austria, France, Germany, and Poland evaluating 160 children of the age group 1 to 16 years, diagnosed with type-1 diabetes.
The results also showed that the Insulin pump therapy resulted in lower blood glucose compared to those achieved during the first 12 months after diagnosis using insulin injections.
Thomas Danne, lead investigator and chief physician at one of the test centers, said, "We noted evidence that reducing glycemic variability has an effect on the pancreas, preserving beta cell function, which likely will improve diabetes outcomes over the long-term in these children."
The company also noted that there were significantly fewer episodes of severe hypoglycemia in patients using an insulin pump with Personal CGM compared to conventional pump groups.
Medtronic markets MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System, which has Personal CGM integrated with the insulin pumps, allowing patients to view glucose levels real-time.
Type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes is a condition in which the body's pancreas does not produce insulin. More than 15,000 children are diagnosed with type-1 diabetes every year or 40 children per day in the U.S., according to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, New York.
MDT finished Thursday's regular trade at $37.23 up 63 cents on a volume of 5.71 million shares on the NYSE
