Martin Nesirky, a British national and former Reuters correspondent, was appointed on Tuesday as the spokesman for United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
"Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today appointed Martin Nesirky of the United Kingdom as the new Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Mr. Nesirky succeeds Michele Montas of Haiti who is retiring from the Organization on 30 November 2009," the UN said in a statement released Tuesday.
"The Secretary-General is grateful to Ms. Montas for her dedication and service as his Spokesperson since the beginning of his term on 1 January 2007," the statement added.
The UN statement said that Nesirky had served three years as a spokesman for the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE). Before joining OSCE, Nesirky was a Reuters reporter and editor for 20 years, with postings in Moscow, Berlin, The Hague, and Seoul.
