American Eagle Outfitters Inc.'s (AEO) December consolidated comparable store sales increased 7% compared with a 17% decrease for the same period last year.
Total sales for the five weeks ended January 2, 2010 rose 9% to $538.9 million compared with $493.5 million for the five weeks ended January 3, 2009.
The company said it is updating its fourth-quarter earnings view to $0.30 - $0.32 per share, excluding any potential investment security or store impairment charges. Prior fourth-quarter earnings guidance was $0.29 - $0.32 per share. On average, 35 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings per share of $0.31 for the quarter. Analysts' estimate typically excludes one-time items.
