US forces killed five gunmen while a tribal conflict left three people dead in northern Iraq Friday, reports quoting Iraqi police said.
The suspected militants were killed by US forces in prolonged gunbattle that began Friday morning on the Mosul-Baghdad road, south of Mosul.
In a separate incident, three people died and five wounded in clashes between members of two tribes north of Mosul, the provincial capital of Nineveh.
Iraq's second largest city, Mosul still remains one of the most volatile regions in the country.
Despite a fall in violence in Iraq since last year, a number of recent blasts have raised fears that sustained violence is returning to the country, aimed at destabilizing the government before the general elections that are just three months away.
