KBR Inc. (KBR) signed a collaboration agreement with BP to promote, market, and execute licensing and engineering services for the slurry bed residue and coal upgrading Veba Combi Cracker or VCC Technology, a hydrogen addition technology.

The company adds VCC to its robust resid technology portfolio, which would currently include a full complement of solvent deasphalting, resid hydrocracking, delayed coking, resid solidification and gasification. The technology would be available for licensing globally, KBR stated.

"The option to convert unconventional feedstocks such as heavy oil and coal will be key in meeting transport fuel demand for the next 25 years," commented Iain Conn, chief executive BP Refining & Marketing.
