Two Indian students were attacked Monday night by 10 persons of apparently Asian features, in Victoria's capital Melbourne in the latest incident of violence against Indians Down Under.
The attack occurred around 10.20 pm (1120 GMT) Monday night in central Melbourne when the two students, aged 18 and 22 respectively, were vilified verbally before being pushed to the ground and kicked, police said.
The younger victim suffered a wound on his left ear, while the other suffered minor abrasions on his forearm.
Police have arrested eight persons, said to be of Asian appearance, in connection with the assault and questioned them. While four of them were later released, the other four are in custody.
"There are allegations from the victim of racial remarks," said a police officer, referring to the complaint lodged by a victim.
The attack came weeks after Nitin Garg, a 21-year-old Indian accountancy graduate, was stabbed to death by some unknown assailants in a park in Melbourne's inner-west.
Diplomatic ties between India and Australia have taken a beating following a string of attacks on Indians Down Under, and the inflow of Indian students to the Land of the Kangaroo has seen a sharp decline.
