Delta Air Lines (DAL), Tuesday responded to Japan Airlines decision to fly along with American Airlines, ditching Delta's offer by stating that Delta is well positioned as the No. 1 carrier between the US and Asia and customers can continue to count on Delta for unmatched access to Japan, with nonstop service between 10 U.S. destinations and Tokyo.

"With recently announced plans to invest $1 billion in our product, Delta remains committed to providing a leading option for travel across the Pacific. Delta's competitive Pacific presence, along with our trans-Atlantic joint venture with Air France/KLM and leading position in global markets, will continue to allow Delta and our SkyTeam partners to meet demand worldwide," the company added.

JAL's decision to fly with American Airlines, Inc., principal subsidiary of AMR Corp. (AMR), was considered a big blow to Delta, which was in a constant effort to woo the bankrupt airline company to the SkyTeam alliance formed by Delta, Air France, AeroMexico and Korean Air Lines.

Both Delta and American Airlines had been in a frantic effort to partner with the financially marred Japanese Air lines, as the partnership would crack out an opening into the the extremely lucrative Asian market. Recently, the US and Japan has also signed an "open skies" agreement to create new opportunities for airlines companies.

Delta's efforts, however, came to an end, at least for now, with the announcement of the bankrupt JAL to partnership with American Airlines and its decision to file for regulatory approvals. JAL reached the current decision by rejecting the $1 billion offer made by Delta to settle its financial crisis.

Meanwhile, American Airlines commented on the issue by stating that Japan Airlines and the government of Japan have made the right choice and said it will work on with JAL to finalize the deal.

SkyTeam is in relentless effort to climb ahead to the Oneworld alliance formed by eleven companies including American Air lines and British Airways.

DAL is currently trading at $12.33, up $1.07 or 9.51%, on a volume of 11.91 million shares.
