Police authorities in Mexico City Thursday arrested and charged six suspects in connection with the shooting and injuring of Paraguayan football striker Salvador Cabanas at a city bar last month.

Prosecutors said they have detained and charged six people with covering for the suspect who shot and injured Cabanas at a Mexico City bar last month. Those charged were reported to be waiters and other staff at the bar where Cabanas was seriously wounded after being shot.

Another employee at the bar has been detained on homicide charges over the shooting, but the man accused of shooting Cabanas in the head is still at large, according to officials and local reports.

Salvador Cabanas was seriously wounded after being shot in the head at a bar in Mexico City before dawn on 25th January. He is currently recovering in a Mexico City hospital from the bullet wound to his head.

The shooting incident took place after Cabanas visited a bar in Mexico City with some of his friends and relatives. Cabanas reportedly got involved in a bar-fight that ended in a shoot-out in the bathroom area of the bar.

Cabanas is one of Latin America's most prolific goal scorers, and was Paraguay's top scorer in the qualifying competition for the World Cup in South Africa with six goals.

Cabanas is an integral part of Paraguay's national football team, and was expected to play in the World Cup in South Africa, where his country is pitted against Italy, Slovakia and New Zealand in Group F.

Before the shooting incident, Cabanas played for Mexican club side Club America in the Primera División de México, and has scored 18 goals for his side in the 24 matches he played for the club this season.
