The new wholesale price-based index for measuring inflation will be in force from May 14 with 2004-05 as the base year. Items like typewriters and VCRs are likely to be replaced by mobile phones and LCD TVs, reports say.
The new index will consist of 250 new items, and is expected to give a more realistic picture of the price rise and its impact on people.
As per the calendar, April data would be released on May 14 with the new base year, a senior official said.
The new series would have around 685 items, including mobile phones and LCD TV among others, the official said, adding that nearly 25 items would be removed from the new series.
Presently, the wholesale price inflation (WPI) is calculated with 1993-94 as the base year.
