At least eight people, including women, were killed when petrol bombs were thrown into a bar in the Mexican resort of Cancun, a popular destination for U.S. tourists.

Unidentified assailants set fire to the bar early on Tuesday, Prosecutor Francisco Alor Quesada told the local media.

Six died at the scene, while two others succumbed to injuries in hospital.

The attackers arrived at the bar in a black car and a truck, Quesada said.

It was unclear if the attack was connected to drug-related violence in Mexico.

Police are investigating.
