International Data Corp., or IDC, the Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker, announced Monday that the total storage software revenues grew 3.3% in the second quarter, mainly reflecting continued gains due to the overall growth from some of the large suppliers. EMC Corp. (EMC) continued to maintain its top position in the quarter with 13.3% growth, followed by International Business Machines Corp (IBM) with a 10.6% increase.

The storage software market delivered good growth and continued signs of recovery in the quarter. Total storage software revenues for the second quarter were $2.96 billion, up 3.3% from $2.86 billion last year, but dropped 2.3% from the first quarter. IDC attributed much of the overall year-over-year growth in revenues to the overall growth from some of the large suppliers.

IDC noted that the storage software revenue growth is in line with worldwide external disk storage systems factory revenues that recorded a year-over-year growth of 20.4% in the second quarter to $5.0 billion.

In the quarter, EMC took the lead in the storage software market, with revenues of $722 million, up 13.3% from last year's $638 million. The company's market share grew to 24.4% from 22.3% a year ago.

Meanwhile, Symantec Corp.'s (SYMC) storage software revenue of $488 million dropped 6.9% from $524 million in 2009, and its market share also fell to 16.5% from 18.3% a year ago.

IBM generated storage software revenue of $410 million in the second quarter, up 10.6% from $371 million a year ago, with market share also increasing to 13.9% from 13.0% in 2009.

In the quarter, NetApp Inc.'s (NTAP) storage software revenue rose 6.0% to $256 million with a 8.7% market share, from the prior year's $241 million with a 8.45 market share, and CA Technologies' (CA) revenue grew 2.0% to $108 million with a 3.6% market share, from $106 million with a 3.7% market share, a year ago.

Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (HPQ) second-quarter storage software revenue decreased 10.3% to $97 million, or 3.3% of market share, from $108 million, or 3.8% of market share, a year earlier.

"From a segment perspective, growth is coming from spending in four segments of storage software: data protection and recovery (up 4.9% year over year), archiving (up 8.2%), storage management (up 5.8%), and storage infrastructure (up 12.7%)," Laura DuBois, program vice president, Storage Software at IDC added.

EMC closed Friday's regular trading session at $19.91, up $0.34 or 1.74% on a volume of 20.35 million shares. IBM rose $2.54% or 2.03% on Friday to close at $127.58 on a 5.14 million share volume.

SYMC settled at $13.98, up $0.01 or 0.07% on a 12.24 million share volume. On Friday, NTAP closed at $44.05, up $0.98 or 2.28%, on a 6.52 million share volume, CA closed at $19.09, up $0.42 or 2.25% on a 4.54 million share volume, and HPQ increased $0.66 or 1.66% and closed at $40.34 on a volume of 18.12 million shares.
