A NATO soldier was killed in a roadside bomb explosion in southern Afghanistan, while three Afghan police officers died when a suicide car-bomber struck outside a bank in Kandahar on Monday, officials said.

A statement by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed the death of the service man, but withheld his nationality pending intimation to the deceased's family.

More than 700 ISAF troops have been killed in Afghanistan during the current year, making it one of the deadliest period for foreign troops since the U.S.-led invasion drove the Taliban out of power more than nine years ago. Around 150,000 foreign troops, most of them Americans, are currently deployed in the war-torn country.

The suicide car-bomber detonated his explosives outside a bank where policemen were lined up to collect their salaries in the southern city of Kandahar. Fourteen policemen were also injured in the blast after which eight reported missing, authorities said.

Reports quoting eye witnesses said adjacent shops and several police and army vehicles were also destroyed in the massive blast.

Even though no one has claimed responsibility, Taliban is suspected behind the attack as Kandahar is considered to be a stronghold of the militant outfit.
