South Korea has ordered the destruction of 23 tons of Chinese egg powder and other processed egg products after finding traces of melamine in them, said officials on Wednesday.
South Korean authorities said that traces of the chemical were found in the processed egg products imported from China's Dalian Hanovo Foods Co. Ltd. and Dalian Greensnow Egg Products Development.
"We've ordered a halt to imports from the two companies and requested the Chinese government to find out the cause of the contamination," South Korea's Farm Ministry said in a statement.
The latest move comes after South Korea ordered the removal of 10 Chinese dairy products from shop shelves earlier in the month after finding traces of melamine in them.
Last month, at least four Chinese babies were killed and over 53,000 Chinese infants became sick after consuming milk product formula laced with melamine, an industrial chemical that artificially increases protein content in dairy products. It led to Chinese dairy products being pulled from shops worldwide.
