Stocks remain entrenched in the red during early afternoon trading on Wednesday. Today's selling pressure comes about after Intel (INTC) and Time Warner (TWX) both diminished expectations for their upcoming quarterly results.

Nearly all the major sectors are on the downside, with gold, semiconductor and brokerage stocks among the biggest losers. Meanwhile, chemical stocks are staying positive.

Going into mid-afternoon trading, the major averages are staying stuck below the unchanged line. The Dow is currently down 177.06 at 8,838.04, while the Nasdaq is down 36.49 at 1,615.89 and the S&P 500 is down 19.75 at 914.95.
