At least 20 people were killed after a bus with some 40 people on board plunged into a 120 meter-deep ravine in Colombia, said officials and media reports on Tuesday.

They said that the accident happened on Monday night when the bus belonging to the Rapido Ochoa company was on its way to the Chocó capital of Quibdo from the city of Medellin.

The officials said that the ill-fated bus plunged off a cliff on the Santa Ana road, about an hour outside the town of Carmen de Atrato.

They added that the death toll in the accident may increase as some reports suggested that the bus was carrying more passengers than its permitted capacity of 40.

Bus accidents are common in the mountainous regions of Colombia, as most of the roads in the region are not properly maintained.
