Peruvian police has said that more than 20 persons were killed and over 40 others injured in a traffic accident involving a truck and two buses on the road linking the southern cities of Arequipa and Juliaca.

Officials said the accident occurred early Tuesday when two buses and a truck collided in the Arequipa province near Bolivia. Many of the injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The huge early morning pile-up was the region's second large-scale crash in 24 hours, after 12 persons were killed and 39 others injured Monday when a bus ran off the road and plunged into a gorge in the southern Andean state of Ayacucho.

Road accidents are common in Peru, where 875 persons were killed last year, and some 5,307 persons were injured. Most incidents involved public transportation, with buses traveling on narrow roads in remote regions of the Peruvian Andes.
