NALCO Q4 Net Profit Dips

National Aluminium Co. Ltd., or NALCO, a public sector enterprise of the Government of India, reported lower standalone net profit for the fourth-quarter, mainly due to increase in expenses.

The Bhubaneswar, Orissa-based company posted fourth-quarter net profit of Rs.83.02 crore or Re.1.29 per share, 81% lower than Rs.446.66 crore or Rs.6.93 per share in the year-ago quarter.

The company's quarterly net revenue fell 7% to Rs.1,088.46 crore from Rs.1,165.23 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2008, while other operating income totaled Rs.37.20 crore, compared with Rs.35.16 crore for the same period last year.

During the quarter, gross revenue plummeted 10% to Rs.1,156.77 crore from Rs.1,287.12 core in the year-ago quarter.

Revenue for the quarter from Chemical segment increased 15% to Rs.492.19 crore from Rs.427.31 crore in the corresponding quarter last year, while revenue from Aluminium segment declined 11% to Rs.803.90 crore from Rs.907.31 crore in the fourth-quarter of 2008. Revenue for the quarter from Electricity amounted to Rs.313.03 crore, up 49% from Rs.209.98 crores in the preceding year quarter.

For the fiscal year, NALCO's net profit declined 22% to Rs.1,272.27 crore from Rs.1,631.52 crore a year-ago.

For the full year, net revenue grew 2% to Rs.5,108.06 crore from Rs.4,988.80 crore last year, while other operating income amounted to Rs.122.74 crore, compared with Rs.145.85 crore a year-ago.

For the first twelve months, NALCO's gross revenue increased 1% to Rs.5,531.06 crore from Rs.5,474.45 core in the year-ago quarter.

The company said its board has recommended a dividend of 15% or Re.1.50 per equity share of Rs.10 each for the fiscal year 2009. This is in addition to the interim dividend of 35% paid earlier.

At the BSE, NALCO closed Wednesday's trading at Rs.356.80, up by Rs.8.55 or 2.46% on a volume of 1.36 lakh shares. The stock hit an intraday high of Rs.363.00 and a low of Rs.347.00.
