Baxter International Inc. (BAX) Thursday reported initiating the Phase III trial of its investigational recombinant von Willebrand factor, or rWWF, BAX 111 as preventive therapy for patients with von Willebrand disease, an inherited bleeding disorder. The trial is expected to evaluate BAX111's safety and effectiveness in treating and preventing bleeding episodes in a minimum of 36 patients.
Bruce Ewenstein, Vvice President for Clinical Affairs at Baxter's BioScience division said "The initiation of the BAX 111 Phase III trial represents a significant step forward as the product, if proven safe and effective, may lead to an alternative treatment choice for clinicians and their patients with von Willebrand disease." He added that, unlike prevalent treatments, BAX111 is not based on blood-based additives. Trial sites are spread across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan and India.
