The Talking Heads have released "Theme," a cut recorded in 1976, one year before the band dropped its first album. The track was recorded July 30, 1976 during the band's performance at NYC punk club CBGB.
The cut is streaming via a Dutch Heads fan site (www.talking-heads.nl/) and clocks in at five minutes, according to Spin:
"The five-minute song opens with ominous guitar and soon spreads out, finding a sun-dappled beachy groove before culminating in a noisy finish."
There is also some stage banter recorded in the clip. After David Byrne intros the instrumental, an audience member calls out, "No title?" Byrne responds, "We call it 'Theme,' but then we just keep it to ourselves."
