Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson are suing Sony Music Entertainment.
The singers — two of the top former American Idol earners of all time — are claiming that Sony Music Entertainment has failed to turn over royalties of at least $10 million in value.
Their legal filing, put forward by Idol creator Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment company, notes that two separate audits of the company support their suit. 19 Entertainment's worldwide head of music, Jason Morey, told the Hollywood Reporter: "We did not want to have to file this lawsuit, but Sony left us no choice, so this became necessary to protect our artists."
The filing also accuses Sony Music of improperly deducting money on television advertising campaigns from artist royalties.
Fellow Idol contestants Clay Aiken, Jordin Sparks and Chris Daughtry are also named in the suit.
