Eurozone Retail Sales Drop More-Than-Expected In July

Eurozone retail sales declined more than expected in July, figures from Eurostat showed on Wednesday.

Retail sales fell 0.4 percent month-over-month in July following the 0.3 percent increase in June. Economists had expected retail sales to drop 0.3 percent.

Food sales dropped 0.6 percent and non-food sales slid 0.2 percent. Meanwhile, automotive fuel sales gained 0.5 percent in July.

On a year-over-year basis, retail sales climbed 0.8 percent in July, after the 1.9 percent growth in June. This was slower than the 0.9 percent rise expected by economists.

In the EU 28, retail sales fell 0.4 percent month-over-month following the 0.3 percent rise in June. Annually, sales rose 1 percent in July, which was slower than the 2.2 percent increase in June.
