Sam Smith has cancelled the rest of his Australian tour after suffering a small vocal cord hemorrhage.

The singer announced the news in an Instagram post, revealing that doctors had ordered him to rest for fear the condition might become more serious.

"I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour," wrote Smith. "I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal cords. The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue. I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. This kills me."

As reported by Billboard, Smith started his tour at Brisbane's Riverstage and played the first of two dates at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion. His second show at the venue, as well as sold out dates in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth have now been cancelled.

Smith says the cancelled dates will be rescheduled for later this year.
