The Swiss stock market ended Wednesday's session with a significant increase, despite continued concerns over Greece and the sharp drop in the Chinese stock market. The weak performance of the U.S. equity markets also failed to dampen the positive mood among investors.

Greece has officially requested a 3-year aid package from the ESM, or European Stability Mechanism. Eurozone leaders have set Sunday as the final deadline for the crisis struck country to submit a new plan for financial assistance.

The Swiss Market Index advanced by 1.01 percent Wednesday and finished at 8,852.43. The Swiss Leader Index climbed by 0.69 percent and the Swiss Performance Index gained 0.88 percent.

The top gainer of the session was oil service company Transocean, which climbed by 4.2 percent.

The positive performance of the index heavyweights provided support to the overall market Wednesday. Roche rose by 1.8 percent and Novartis increased by 2.1 percent. Shares of Nestle also finished up by 0.8 percent. Novartis announced that the U.S. FDA has approved its heart failure treatment Entresto.

Holcim increased by 1.5 percent, as the company's merger with Lafarge nears completion. The public exchange offer made by Holcim resulted in 87.46 percent of Lafarge's share capital being offered by shareholders.

Kuehne + Nagel gained 1.2 percent, after Goldman Sachs upgraded its rating on the stock to "Neutral" from "Sell."
